2歳からボールに触れサッカーを始める。幼い時からサッカークラブに所属し、男の子に混じって練習を重ねる。14歳でなでしこリーグ日テレ・ベレーザに入団。16歳で日本代表に選出。その後、数々の国際試合に出場し日本チームの成果に貢献。
21歳でプロに転向。同時にフランス女子リーグ、モンペリエHSCに移籍。翌年に出場したFIFAドイツW杯では日本チームの優勝に貢献。
今もなお、日本代表として世界の第一線でプレーし、現在は米国シアトル・レインFCで活躍している。テクニックを存分に発揮するプレイスタイルが持ち味で、後方からでも前線に繰り出す、試合展開を変える正確な左足の攻撃的パスに定評がある。
Rumi began to play football from the age of two. She played for her local football club from childhood, training with the boys. At the age of 14, she joined NTV Bereza, a leading Japanese women’s league club. She made her debut for the Japanese national team at the age of 16, and has been contributing to their success ever since.
She turned professional at the age of 21, transferring to Montpellier HSC in France at the same time. She was a member of the FIFA World Cup winning team the following year.
Today, she continues to play an integral part for the Japanese national team, and is also the core player for Seattle Reign FC in USA. She is highly technically gifted, as demonstrated in her style of play, especially her left foot which can produce defense splitting, game changing passes with unerring accuracy from the back line to the front.
